Dr. Behnke's credibility is founded in
his 5 years of teaching in the public
schools and 11 years as the chair of the
NATA professional education committee
that petitioned the American Medical Association
to provide a national accreditation process
for entry-level athletic trainers. Further,
during his 1982 and 1989 sabbaticals,
he served as an athletic trainer for boxing,
men's field hockey, team handball, ice-skating,
roller hockey, gymnastics, judo, and cycling
at the United States Olympic Training
Center.
One of the great things about a famous
teacher taking the time to share their
knowledge, experience, and quest for a
greater understanding of anatomy, is the
reader has the opportunity to benefit
from these presentations. These experiences,
combined with the 39 years of teaching
anatomy, kinesiology, physical education,
and athletic training courses, provide
the foundation for the introductory presentation
in this text. The best target for this
text is those beginning in athletic training,
coaching, kinesiology, physical education,
and related areas.
As a graduate and undergraduate professor
of anatomy, biomechanics, and exercise
physiology, I believe this text can assist
my students in gaining knowledge and understanding
of anatomy. These students will become
the physical educators, coaches, teachers
and trainers of the future. This will
be a less difficult endeavor for them
with benefits derived from Dr. Behnke's
text.
On a 1-5 rating scale, I would award
"Kinetic Anatomy" with a 5-Star
rating. Further, I would also give a 5-Star
rating to the CD "Essentials of Interactive
Functional Anatomy.' The reasons, beyond
the content and graphics, for these rating
are based in the range of the readability
(10th through graduate) and an ease of
reading score of 60 – 90 (based
on the Fischer readability scale).
The author included 2 items that may
help students navigate the text a little
easier. These include a table of figures,
and a list of tables in the front of the
book.
There are a couple of things that I have
learned from this text. They are: the
importance of figures and tables to help
clarify content and the changing needs
of our audience. The navigation will allow
the students to find solutions to problems
encountered. The audiences at all levels
of education are becoming so sophisticated
that meeting their needs is a critical
piece in the puzzle.
