Urban Physical Education: Instructional Practices and Cultural
Activities
This book is a helpful tool for teacher in all areas. It
is comprised of two parts. Part 1 discusses important considerations
for teaching in an urban setting. There is an assumption in
the book that most urban schools contain large populations
of English Language Learners (ELL) and are culturally diverse.
The section on communication strategies and tips to use with
ELL students is helpful. There are approximately 42 unique
activities in the book from varying cultures. The activity
descriptions are clear, easy to understand and implement.
There are a variety of "trigger" scenarios (such
as dealing with profanity, excuses and disrespect) which discuss
issues that are common to urban teaching settings. These are
particularly helpful for beginning teachers or teachers new
to urban settings as they give some possible solutions for
these issues. .
Part 2: This section of the book includes a variety of culturally
diverse activities (Urban Golf, Four Goals Football and Krumping)
which are quite unique and could be used with all students.
There is an activity finder section that is beneficial as
it describes the various activities and countries of origin.
There are a few assessment rubrics at the end of the book.
These are somewhat generic but do provide the reader with
a start on assessment.
Overall this is a good book and resource for physical education
teachers.
