EMF BUBBLE TAG

Personal Space Game

Objective: Students practice traveling safely in their own personal space.

Cognitive Link: Each cell has an electromagnetic field (EMF). This electromagnetic field extends about three feet from the body. This creates what we call "personal space".

Equipment: One hula-hoop per student.

Organization: To begin the game, each student stands in his/her personal space inside and holding a hula-hoop.

Anticipatory Set: Teacher's Quote: "Each cell has a electromagnetic field. This electromagnetic field extends about three feet from the body. This creates what we call "personal space". Today we are going to practice moving safely through our play area pretending that our hula-hoops are bubbles that represent our personal space. The idea is to not get your bubble popped.""

Activity: Everybody is IT. When the teacher gives the "go" signal, students travel around trying to avoid getting "popped" while also trying to pop others bubbles by gently tapping others hula-hoops with their own. When popped, the student drops his/her hoop to the floor and yells for help. A safe student rescues the popped student by touching him on the shoulder and saying, "Personal space". The game continues until the teacher gives the signal to stop.

Closure: Teacher's Quote: "Keeping your personal space safe is important for your safety and well being. What are some other ways that you can keep your personal space safe? (Watch where you're going. Go just fast enough to stay in control, judge how much space you'll need to travel through an area, etc.)"
