This months Technology section features a discussion on some things that you might be able to do during the summer to make next fall better.  First I'll talk about getting a camera and how you might use that to set up stations, a newsletter, or a way to let your class use the camera to describe activities they make up on their own.  I will also use a little bit of time to discuss transferring some of those old records or tapes that you have to CD's that are much more convenient to use during class.  Finally we will discuss a little bit of how to work on your lessons for next year to make sure you've linked those to your state objectives for physical education.

With this introduction let's look at each area and some things you might do this summer.

 Cameras

Getting a camera Can involve a anything from a simple camera that will takes low resolutions stills that can be found on sale at your local Wal-Mart or OfficeMax for less than $20.00 these would be very handy to use for still pictures that might go in a newsletter, on a worksheet, or for students to document their own work.  In today's paper I saw 4 mega pixel camera with a 3 X. optical zoom and 4X digital zoom for $199.00 .  These cameras generally will allow you to take a short section of video that you could use to document student performance, or you could use to set up a skill Workstation  If your school has a little more money you may want to invest in a digital camcorder this would allow you to not only take videos but also allow you to take many many still pictures.  You can find these cameras for $399.00 and up depending on the features you want.

 Lesson Plans

The summer can be a good time to review and revise your lesson plans to include your State objectives.  It can also be a time to organize your lessons in to units or just collect all of these various lessons into a more organized the format .

In Virginia I use the state associations web site to link me to the state Standards of Learning for Physical Education. If you go to "Click To See More Resources" box at the top of the page or go to PE Central you can find a link to most of the state sites and from there you can find your own state's objectives.  Reviewing and revising some of your lesson plans this summer might help make sure your lessons clearly focus on objectives.  You can also review your lessons at this time to see if they include a good progression from one skill theme to the next .

One final thing for this summer: Refresh, Recreate, and Relax.

Have a great summer.

 Music

How many times have you wished you could get that old copy of the "Chicken Dance" off of that original 45 or tape you have and put it onto a CD.  It's not that hard to do using a turntable or tape recorder and your computer.  You just need a connector to hook that item up to your computer and then you can make your own copy of that digitally and burn it to a CD.  My recording software allows me to add data files from any source and then make a CD.  Although I have used some of my records and recorded those digitally it helps if you get software that will allow you to the eliminate some of the hiss and scratches from your records. If you're using a record off a turntable in class anyway the students might not notice that there is a difference when you play it from the CD.  Once I've recorded all the tracks I want to have on the CD I will save them all to a single file that I can use on my MP3 player, or I can burn a CD that I can use on my boom box in the gymnasium.  This is a great way to make use of some of those fantastic recordings we all have in our personal and school libraries and now you will be able to use these without having to search to get to the start of a tape or a groove on a record that some of you folks from my generation might remember.
