Here at PELINKS4U Headquarters on the snowstruck campus of Central Washington University we are putting together our Healthy Hearts issue. In this months Interdisciplinary section we take a look at a lesson plan that gets the whole school involved in learning about the heart.

Secondly, in this section we start to take a look at the concept of Accelerated Learning in physical education. This concept comes from Steve Ward, Steve is a former Head of Physical Education and Sport with over fourteen years teaching and coaching experience. Make sure to check this out.

And not to forget our Jean Blaydes monthly contribution, this month we have another great game idea from her book "Thinking on Your Feet." Lub Dub Tag is the name of the game featured this month. Take a minute and check out this and other featured games from our archived Jean Blaydes monthly feature in our Interdisciplinary section

"Thinking on Your Feet" w/ Jean Blaydes

This section within the Interdisciplinary page is updated each month with a new idea from Jean Blaydes' book Thinking on Your Feet. This month's idea is called "LUB DUB TAG" The whole idea behind this is for students to learn heart anatomy and the importance of good heart health.

 Accelerated Learning In Physical Education

"If we do what we've always done, then we will get what we always got!"

Accelerated learning techniques are becoming more popular within education, and their use is now more widespread within the classrooms of schools around the world. However, from my own research there seems to be little evidence to currently show much use of these techniques within physical education.

This article seeks to provide an understanding into the benefits of using accelerated learning techniques in physical education, particularly to improve the skill learning process.

What is Accelerated Learning?

Skill teaching has traditionally taken many hours of repeated training, practicing physically over and over again until it is mastered. Accelerated Learning enhances the speed and effectiveness of this process by emphasizing the building of learner confidence and esteem, fostering the development of positive, tenacious learning attitudes and including mental training techniques such as mind calming, relaxation, visualization, modeling and concentration, as well as utilizing techniques from the latest brain research including kinesiology, multiple intelligences, neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), multi-firing, and emotional intelligence.

How Can I Accelerate Learning In Physical Education?

I have identified seven key ways to accelerate learning in physical education and I have presented these below. Further details of these are provided in a follow-up article 'Seven Tips For Accelerating Learning In Physical Education'.

  1. Match challenge and capability - differentiation.
  2. Create a relaxed and positive learning environment.
  3. Use cross lateral activators to promote left/right brain interaction.
  4. Ensure that pupils use both dominant and non- dominant sides to improve physical and academic performance.
  5. Use Multi-firing activities to increase sensory coordination.
  6. Get pupils to use visualization to practice skills mentally before they do them physically.
  7. Remember to use wide range of teaching and learning styles. 'The more ways you teach, the more people you reach'.

These methods can be used in their entirety, in combination, and even singularly, to help to make skill learning faster, and more effective. They can be seen as the difference that makes the difference!

Healthy lifestyle program for the entire family

The Heart "E" Heart program has been designed to enhance the health and well-being of children and their families. Understanding the lifestyle needs of children and to provide guidance as to what a parent can do to promote a healthier lifestyle for their children is one of the objectives of the program. At the same time, we know the parents will learn new and informative healthy lifestyle tips from Heart "E" Heart too!

  • Physical inactivity is worse than ever before!
  • Obesity has now reached an epidemic stage
  • Diabetes has now reached an epidemic stage!
  • Heart Disease is still on the rise!
  • High Blood Pressure continues to be a problem!
  • Alcohol and tobacco consumption continues to be a problem!

How do we reverse this disturbing health news that obesity and diabetes have reached an epidemic stage with our children? No teacher or parent can compete with the fast food industry or all the sugar packed or high fat commercials on TV. We are literally supersizing ourselves to death!

Education is the key! It is time to educate children and their parents on how to better take care of themselves - to become more physically active, eat nutritiously, be safe, and avoid drugs and alcohol.

The former U.S. Surgeon General, David Satcher, MD believes “we need to look for ways to promote physical activity and good nutrition at home, in schools and throughout all communities.”

The Solution - the Heart “E” Heart Healthy Lifestyle Program

The Heart “E” Group International Inc. is pleased to announce a comprehensive cross-disciplined health and lifestyle program designed to teach pre-school and primary grade children the “whys” of positive, healthy lifestyle habits:

  • Voluntarily increase physical activity levels.
  • Eat more nutritiously.
  • Avoid tobacco and alcohol products.
  • Adhere to safety rules.

Name of Best Practice: Healthy Heart School Wide Interdisciplinary Unit

Rationale/Purpose of Event: To study the benefits of living a heart-healthy life style. The secondary purpose was to involve the entire school in studying this subject.

Suggested Grade Level:K-5

Materials Needed: Each discipline provided it's own materials (i.e., Art teacher-art supplies; Classrooms-books, craft supplies; PE-jump ropes, charts, prizes; Music-"heart" music; etc.)

Healthy Heart School Wide Interdisciplinary Unit

We participated in this interdisciplinary unit during February-National Heart Month. We (physical education teachers) wanted to add to our Jump Rope for Heart program and decided to go all out with a school-wide unit that focused on the entire school learning about the heart and how to keep it healthy.

From the beginning to the end of the month each classroom took a turn each morning giving a "heart fact" over the school intercom. They would begin with "Did you Know that..." Some classes even made up songs and raps! To keep the theme for the month alive, each fact would end with "...and remember-Get into the Action with a Healthy Heart!"

Each week we had a special event. Some of them are described next:

To kick off the unit we had a door decorating contest (hearts in action). Instead of "cutsie" valentine hearts, classroom doors displayed hearts jumping rope, running, lifting weights, etc. We gave a jump rope to the winning classroom at each grade level.

We had an all-staff (teachers, aides, janitors, principals, secretaries, cooks) team jump rope contest (two teams: red and white blood cells). The staff came into the gym all week, during their spare time, counted their jumps and recorded them on a chart on the wall. Those who could not jump, because of health reasons, were allowed to turn the rope for others and count their turns. We kept a running total on the front hall bulletin board each day and awarded plastic medals to the winning team.

One week we had a contest to guess the number of candy hearts in a large jar. The winning class won the jar of candy.

Our culminating activity was an assembly. The third grade performed the song "Heart Power" (from the Heart Association Heart Power kit). We gave out JRFH awards, prizes for the contests, and had students give a jump rope demonstration. We announced how much money our students raised for the Heart Association.

All through the month the Art classes made heart projects and displayed them in the front hall. Music classes sang heart songs. Physical education classes did jump rope activities and elaborated on the heart fact for the day. Many of the classroom teachers were able to have their classes study the heart and healthy life styles from the discipline perspectives of math, science, health, reading, and spelling.

This unit was a real effort on everyone's part, but well worth it. The students had a great time and really learned important information about the heart and living a healthy lifestyle.
