 Communication Skills

Effective communication skills do not come naturally for everyone but just like many other skills, it can be improved with practice and effort.

To get a deeper look at some of the more important factors involved in effective communication and start improving the way you relate to others as a coach, head over to Sports Coach.

Many first-time coaches believe that all there is to coaching is to teach athletes the skills of their specific sport and motivate them to do their best. Little did they know that communication plays a major role in their success. The Coaching Communications Resource Site has many helpful articles and is even promoting a manual called the Coaches Communication Playbook!

 Why is Communication Important?

To put it simply, you can't hope to be an effective coach if you don't have the ability to communicate. In fact, poor communication skills are often the reason for failure as a coach.

There are a whole host of occasions where good communication is key but here are the main ones.

1. When you are dealing with the parents of athletes.

2. When you are explaining skills and concepts to athletes.

3. When you are working with the media, organizations or fans.

4. When you are trying to get points across to officials or referees.

 Constructive Criticism

Ahhh. Here it is. The meat and potatoes of dealing with your athletes, correcting their mistakes, improving their skills as well as improving your own skill as a coach. What are the best ways to give constructive criticism? How do you take constructive criticism yourself?

Greg Walker of Oregon State University has detailed some assumptions and guidelines about constructive criticism. Although it is an outline from the general point of view, it is very easy to apply these concepts of constructive criticism your own coaching arsenal.
