The good news is that Sue Tarr and I were obviously on the same
page...starting to think about summer and the opportunities available
for individuals with disabilities and their families.
Sue had some great recommendations in the
last edition. I've added a few more recommendations.

Dr. Nick Breit hosts an
Annual Junior Wheelchair Camp at California State University, Northridge
from June 24-June 28th. The camp is in its 17th year and its
counselors are individuals who have dealt successfully with their
own disabilities.
Drs. John Downing &
Peter Aufsesser at San Diego State University host a summer program
for adults through August 2nd.
One of the VERY BEST camps around is Camp ASCCA. The Camp
ASCCA Mission is to help children and adults with disabilities
achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence. This
is to be accomplished through a safe and quality program of camping,
recreation, and education in a year-round barrier-free environment.
Our goal is to serve those who can derive maximum benefit from the
resident camp experience and provide a healthier, happier, longer,
and more productive life for children and adults of all abilities.
Camp ASCCA will also accent "reverse mainstreaming" by
including non-disabled persons with disabled persons in the resident
camping experience to facilitate the sharing of information and
programs of advocacy.

Dr. Lauren Lieberman hosts an outstanding camp at the State University
of New York at Brockport. Camp
Abilities is a one week developmental sports camp for children
who are blind, deaf-blind or multi-handicapped. The camp is set
up to provide a 1:1 instructional situation for each child.
Counselors are undergraduate and graduate students from all over
the US in professional preparation programs such as adapted physical
education, physical education, and special education.
Dr. Barry Lavay hosts the excellent Camp
Nugget at California State University Long Beach. It is
a carefully supervised program from June 24-July 19, 2002 that offers
campers with disabilities opportunities to learn skills in aquatics,
fundamental movement skills, adapted sports and cooperative activities.
Dr. Sherry Folsom-Meek at Mankato State University hosts a summer
Aquatics camp from June 19 - June 28, 2002. For more information,

Dr. Scott Modell at California State University, Sacramento has a
summer camp called WAVE

hang 10.
Dr. Jeff McCubbin hosts a comprehensive year round clinic at
Oregon
State University. The program extends into the summer, as
well. |
And I saw a new heaven and new earth,
for the first heaven and the first earth were passed
away...
And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying,
Behold...
I make all things new.

Dr. Chris Stopka recommends the following Florida
camps: "There is an awesome camp in Florida for summer (and
during the year on weekends) for kids with disabilities called the
Boggy Creek Camp (started
by
Paul Newman and Gen. Norman Schwartzkopf), similar to Paul's Hole
in the Wall Gang camp in New England. Another great one in
central Florida is Camp
Challenge.
