With the Holiday Season upon us, many things are happening.  Decorations are going up. Cookies are being made. Gifts are being bought and wrapped.  Families are coming together to share the cheer of the Holidays.

But school is still in session.  Classes continue even with all the hustle and bustle around us.  So many things to do, thus the question is - how can we bring to cheer of the Holidays into our gyms, while of course still be sure that learning occurring?

This section will focus on Holiday Games and Activities for Physical Education.  Of course there will be adaptations that could be made so that the activities are appropriate for all learners and movers.

May you find some activities that you can use, and may this holiday season be a joyful one for all.  Let it snow, if only in our hearts.

 Holiday Activities- Why do them?

There are numerous reasons that Holiday activities should be added into your bag of learning activities

  • Great opportunity to do cross curricular learning (i.e. integrating classroom activities into physical education)
  • Great opportunity to add something new to your unit plans
  • Great opportunity to bring some fun and excitement into the gym.
  • Great opportunity to have students work on art projects that can then be used in physical education

These are just a few of the reasons why holiday activities are a great addition to any physical education program. Work with the other teachers in your school and see what you can do. Remember also, that through the cross-curricular activities it is more likely that students with disabilities can be included.

Making the Modifications for Holiday Activities

Think Change!!!  How can you change the activities? Why does Softball or Baseball need to have people run the bases in order of first, second, third, and home?  Think outside of the box.

Below are four elements of a game or activity to consider where changes can be made.

First - consider the equipment.  Does it have to be the same size and/or weight?  Can it be placed on the wall instead of the floor?  Can it be held?

Second - Consider the space of the activity.  Does it have be a certain distance?  Does the target have to be so high?  Does the implement really have to travel so far?

Third - consider the rules.  Do all students need to follow the same rules to accomplish the activity?  Do all students need to perform at the same level for the task to be completed successfully?  Can the number of choices be reduced to enhance success?

Fourth - Consider the time.  Do all students have to complete the task in a specific amount of time?  Must all students do the same number of tasks to reach successful completion?

Make sure that whatever game or activity you use provides all students with

  • sufficient activity
  • successful participation
  • appropriate challenges
  • continued interest and participation.

Do Not Miss the End the Season sales!!

Many teachers love the dollar stores, Walmart, K-mart, Hobby Lobby, and other discount or craft stores.  The best time to be shopping for little holiday equipment is done at the end of the season when the stores have everything priced to move.  Little pumpkins, little snow balls, little snow men, and other holiday decorations can be purchased with a small budget, and can bring in a great amount of seasonal excitement.

Remember that your creativity is key to making the activities appropriate for ALL individuals.

Long Distance Wheelie - New Record Set

Robert Hensel set a new world record for the Longest Long distance Wheelie in a wheelchair on October 3, 2002.  The distance of the Wheelchair wheelie was more than 6 miles (6.178 miles to be exact)

Motivation for completing this feat was twofold.  First, Hensel wanted to raise money for wheelchair ramps in his local community.  Second, he is hoping to generate interest in long distance wheelchair wheelie so that it could become a sport for people with disabilities.

Congratulations to Robert Hensel, Oswego, NY.
