Daily Physical Education A
Reality?
Last week we heard that a bill was moving through the Texas Legislature
to require physical education in grades K-6. This is a bill we should
all follow closely for the trend elsewhere seems to be moving toward
reducing time for physical education.
When I hear about PE time bring reduced it reminds me of a comment
I once heard Chuck Corbin make about changing "happy puppies
into old dogs." He was of course referring to our tendency
to take young physically active children and force them to spend
most of the day sedentary in our elementary classrooms.
Cursory observation of most elementary school classrooms reveals
far too many overweight and obese students. Unfortunately, as classroom
teachers feel increasingly pressured to raise test scores it's inevitable
that "nonacademic" class time is reduced.
We could use more data that shows academic scores actually improve
when children participate in DAILY physical education. For those
of us who exercise regularly it's obvious that being physically
active helps us to be more productive, feel better, and ward off
illnesses.
Let's all hope Texas is successful in its daily PE efforts. We
will keep you informed as we hear more.
