EDITORIAL
NEW YEAR Greetings from pelinks4u

I'm delighted to announce an exciting change to pelinks4u beginning this month. In addition to the latest PE news and ideas and tips shared by our regularly contributing authors, pelinks4u will be featuring some specially invited guest essays.

First up is Gale Wiedow, who as the current AAHPERD President led this year's unification of the American Alliance and recently announced the renaming of AAHPERD to become the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE America). In his essay, Gale describes how our profession is in transition and his hopes for the future.

Second, Georgia State professor and prolific PE writer Mike Metzler responds to my pelinks4u October editorial with an essay entitled, "Is physical education heading towards extinction or a renaissance?" His essay is a must read for anyone concerned about what physical education will or should look like in the future.

Additionally, Heather Van Mullem examines the exemplary role modeling of Coach Pat Summitt. NFL Teacher of the Year Tom Winiecki shares some of the "aha!" moments in PE he's experienced in more than 30 years of teaching. Paul Clinton continues with the second part of his advocacy series this time focusing on school board presentations. Finally, Victoria Otto, a former state and district TOY takes readers on a "trip on the wild side" describing the positive impact of a year long high school yoga class she's developed.

All in all it's a great start to 2014. We hope you enjoy pelinks4u and encourage you to "recommend" and "share" articles through your Facebook accounts. Thanks again for your support and best wishes for a great 2014.

A Profession in Transition
2013 was a year of great change for AAHPERD our professional organization. Five national associations were integrated into one new entity. Then AAHPERD was renamed as SHAPE America. AAHPERD President Gale Wiedow shares with pelinks4u readers the reasons and motivation for these changes and his hopes for our professional future.
Is Physical Education Heading Towards Extinction or a Renaissance?
Where is physical education headed in 2014 and beyond? Mike Metzler critiques physical education's status today noting rising public support for our programs. But he also cautions us to think carefully about the expectations we set for PE in the future. He describes two possible futures one positive, one negative. He questions whether our focus should be on teaching skills or physical activity. See what you think!
This is Why I Teach!
Most physical educators will tell you that they have the best job in the world. Sure there are ups and downs and dealing with school bureaucracy isn't always fun, but in the gym it's a different story. After more than 30 years of elementary school teaching Tom Winiecki clearly loves what he does and in this essay shares some of the "aha" moments explaining why he teaches. If you teach, you'll love his stories!
Advocating for Our Profession: Presenting to Your School Board (Part 2)
Former Washington State, AHPERD President, and high school PE teacher Paul Clinton has committed himself to successful professional advocacy. In his words, "advocacy is preventive medicine" and in this article he shares his "offensive-defensive" approach. Paul points out that advocacy efforts should begin when your program is going well not when it's being threatened. The time to get advocating is NOW!
Take a Trip on the Wild Side: A Classroom Journey through the Yoga Experience
Fourteen years ago, high school PE teacher Victoria Otto introduced her cross-training students to some yoga skills. They loved it so much she was encouraged to create a separate yoga class. Since then the class has evolved to include not only yoga instruction, but also the anatomical and physiological benefits. But more importantly, her students learn to apply the skills and knowledge from this class into their outside lives. Read their comments and learn more about the potential for yoga teaching.
Coach Pat Summitt: Values in Action
For basketball fans, University of Tennessee Coach Pat Summitt is a legendary figure. The winningest coach in college basketball history, her career was recently cut short due to early onset Alzheimer's disease. But throughout more than 30 years of coaching she exemplified a life committed not only to winning basketball games but also to being a positive role model for her female athletes. Heather Van Mullem examines this legacy.
